August is hell for those vessels trading in the middle east. With temperature reaching at record scorching high of +50’C and it will be plus five degrees more if you are working inside the engine room.
Worst comes to worst your vessel’s airconditioning system is Kaput!
Then even your cabin and the entire accomodation will become a floating hell at sea!
One way to give your crew an instant vacation to paradise is to make something that will refresh them on their breaktime.
Best way is to go natural, skip the powdered mix
Melon is always sweet on summer, that’s one reason to serve it on that season.
Now on with the cooking…
Sweet Melon Coolers
Prep. time: 5 minutes
Difficulty: Very Easy
Makes; 5 Liters
Good for 12 crew working on scorching heat of the sun
You will need;
1 large (2 kgs.) melon {Philippine native melon} or Cantaloupe
4 liters cold water
2 cups sugar, white granulated
4 cups (1 kilo) ice cubes
Mint to garnish
*FOR RICHER TASTE: YOU CAN OMIT SUGAR AND SUBSTITUTE IT WITH CONDENSED MILK AND VANILLA
2 big can (398ml) sweet condensed milk
1 Tbsp. vanilla, powder or liquid
Direction;
Cut melon into half, remove pulp and seeds, place in a stainer.
Pour cold water thru the strainer to extract the natural flavor of melon pulp and seeds.
Discard pulp and seeds.
Add the sugar and stir until dissolved.
If you you prefer to enjoy it with milk, omit the sugar and substitute it with condensed milk. But some variety of melon such as Honeydew become bitter after adding any type of milk.
Add vanilla powder/liquid.
Top with ice cubes and garnish with freshly pick mints.
Refresh and enjoy!!! 😉
Here’s how I do it;
If you are in the Philippines, this handy tool is quite easy to find on supermarket.
In other countries, I can only suggest to search this on AMAZON.COM;

Nino, this is so gooood!!! Um, what did you use to ‘scrape’ the Melon??

Hi Jhuls,
I actually don’t know what’s the proper English name for that tool but I will assume it is called MELON SCRAPER. The melon scraper that I use was just made onboard by our engine crew. It is made of stainless steel. And if you’re buying one, hard plastic or good quality of stainless steel is your best choice.
I already edit the post and add a photo of the actual Melon Scraper that I use.
Thanks for asking, Jhuls. 🙂

Okay, so at least I am thinking of the same tool. 😀 Do you think a grater could be used on this? You know, for a smaller ones. 🙂

Hello Jhuls,
I did try grating the melons on the big holes of a Box Grater. I was not satisfied with the result.
But I also learn something interesting. I also tried it on the small holes of the grater and the melons just liquifies, adding more flavor to the juice. =)
Thanks for the Idea!

That’s what I am after – the juices from the melon so I thought about the grater. Jus like when I want fresh ginger tea, I grate the ginger instead of chopping. 🙂 Thanks, Nino. 🙂

That looks like a deliciously refreshing way to cool down! I recognise the Dr. Oetker vanilla sugar. Just love the smell of it as it always reminds me of happy baking times – I grew up in Germany where you can get it everywhere.
Lovely to discover your blog at FF.
